In this paper we present an implementation for a typical Android application to support Plug-ins or add-on application to enhance functionality at run time. Such a framework allows an application to offer new functionality without updating the base application every time in the application store. Our implementation uses advanced bound services and AIDL concepts to provide communication between the application and its plugins. It implements an installed plugin discovery mechanism and also provides deployment from Plug-In SDK perspectives. The plug-ins developed with this framework implementation use the typical Android method for application development, which is the Android SDK. Therefore, no extra skill set is required for first or third party developers to write such plug-ins. We present how the plug-ins are discovered and launched from the parent application, and also how the parent application can expose APIs which are utilized by the plug-ins. We consider typical native Android applications as well as web applications as plugins. We identify key problems in implementing web applications as plugins and their solutions. We also analyze how to open the plug-in development kit to third party developers i.e. deployment scenarios of the plugin SDK. Finally, we determine the time taken to execute an API which transfers various sizes of data over bound service inter process communication.Blood Bank Application

There are various types of Android applications, such as utilities, games, education, and enterprise applications available on the application store. We can also categorize them by application complexity: from simple, small and task specific utilities to highly complex and big size applications such as the internet browser. When an application developer wants to change or upgrade the functionality or design of an application
which is already available in the application store, they typically release a new version. However the customization and user requirements are so wide that typically a single
version change cannot fulfil them all. Also due to the variety of devices, disk space and memory constraints, it is not advisable to deploy large and resource consuming applications. Another major problem is delivering the update of an application to all
users and making sure they install them. View More

The rest of the paper is organized as follows: Section 2 looks at related work in the area of plugin-ins. Section 3 discusses building blocks of a typical Android application.
Section 4 talks about advanced bound services concept in Android such as AIDL. Section 5 looks at our actual framework implementation. Section 6 talks about the
deployment model for various APIs which are exposed to plugin applications. Section 7 explores adding Java Script support for web based applications. In section 8 we measure the time taken to transfer various data size over API on a reference device Click Here
